Simply amazed

I know I shouldn't be, but I am constantly amazed that people, rich & poor alike, don't plan for their demise. What is about planning for creating a will that scares people so?

No, I don't have a will. I do, however, have all of my assets up to date and my closest family members are aware of where my documents are located.

For me it's a failure to acknowledge my own immortality combined with the fact that I can't bear to think of someone else looking after my children.

Maybe not good excuses but they are compelling for me.

Yeah, I could see that, but one has to face reality at some point. I guess, I would want to plan those things, just in case.

I think people are afraid to face their own mortality. We, as a society, have a hard time discussing death.

My father died young. He was 46 and had no will. Although, intestate laws gave everything to my mom, brother and me, it was still a mess. That is not to say that a will makes things easier, because people contest wills all the time. But, it does make it easier for the court to see what the person really wanted.

Also, I think single people or couples without clildren do not think to draft a will. It is still important as well.

SS - you're probably right, just as bsouth stated. Folks are afraid to face their own mortality. That really does a disservice for those that are left to deal with the fallout from the death. :(
